“Then, Athens swung into view, and it was everything I had hoped it would be.” - Stephen Fry
While Athens has been healing, we’ve been busy creating exciting new ways for you to explore our legendary city.
We’re delighted to now introduce our brand new podcast series, We’ll Always Have Athens, debuting this week (13 May). Produced by The Greek Podcast Project for This is Athens, the 6-part series invites stellar guests—who know and love the city—to lead an audio odyssey that will deliver Athens straight to your ears, from wherever you are in the world. From mythical heroes who shaped the soul of this ancient metropolis, to modern-day musings on Athens’ bright urban culture, our personalised audio accounts will reveal the authentic essence of Athens today—a city that is so much more than a living museum.
New episodes of We’ll Always Have Athens will come out every fortnight. Subscribe now on Spotify, Apple Music, Pocket Casts, or wherever you listen to your podcasts, to make sure you don’t miss an episode.
Each episode will feature a different host; from acclaimed actors and musicians, to authors and urban explorers. Kicking things off: the great British author, comedian and Hellenophile Stephen Fry. (You can listen to the full episode here.)
In the 20-minute recording made while in lockdown in the UK, Fry shares his three favourite myths about Athens and explains why the historic neighbourhood of Thissio will always claim a place in his heart. Through his masterful evocations, you’ll feel the pulse of the city’s origins, still beating amid the ancient temples and winding lanes.
Later in the series, you can discover storied streets and hidden corners with urban rover Nikos Vatopoulos; dive into Athens’ literary legacy with best-selling author Victoria Hislop; and re-frame the capital in a different light through the nostalgic eye of photographer Robert McCabe.
