From Greater... to Contemporary Greece
If you haven’t visited the National Historical Museum yet, now is the time. NHM’s temporary exhibition From Greater... to Contemporary Greece revisits a tumultuous part of contemporary Greek history. “Greater Greece” refers to the “Great Idea,” a visionary nationalist aspiration that was prominent in the early 20th century and aimed towards national integration. That’s when the Asia Minor expedition took place, which ended with the Smyrna Catastrophe in 1922. These events were central to the consolidation of the borders and population of the Greek state as we know them now. The exhibition includes photographs, objects, testimonies, diary extracts, press, and videos that showcase the Greek presence in Minor Asia and the events of the expedition until the retreat of the Greek army and the destruction of Smyrna.
