The open-air Dora Stratou Dance Theatre on Philopappou Hill hosts a rich repertoire of traditional Greek dance performances where dancers wear original folk costumes, jewellery and items from a 2,000-strong collection spanning various Greek regions. The stage of the 860-seat theatre is designed to resemble a village plateia (plaza) where dancing takes place during festivities. The Theatre's role in the preservation of Greek dances extends to supporting field research programmes in dance ethnography, dance history or sociology, and maintaining archives of dance books, articles, field recordings, photographs, videos and films. The Theatre also offers dance classes, seminars and workshops.
