Athens Epidaurus Festival 2022: Danse Macabre - Martin Zimmermann
Death, the great equaliser. Think Japanese Butoh, meets circus, meets the Tiger Lillies, and we still haven’t quite managed to capture Martin Zimmermann’s take on the Mediaeval allegory, Danse Macabre. A ragtag group of three, living among trash and debris, and Death - Zimmermann himself - engage in frenetic movement on stage, dragging us into the messy and disgusting terrain of Life. Sounds impossible, but props, juggling acts, and a rotating room can make Death seem like an entertaining topic.
Act fast because Zimmermann is a Pireos 260 audience favourite - especially since his 2021’s Ein, Zwei, Drei. And while you’re at it, check yet another ingenious dance performance that dwells in the dark, Mal - Embriaguez divina.
