The Eurovision Ball
Emerging from the 60s’ New York queer subculture, ball(room)s have been shelters for the African-American and Latin American members of the LGBTQ+ community. If you don’t know what a ballroom is, think Madonna’s Vogue choreography on a model runway and turn the volume up to a thousand. He/she/they who would walk best, would claim the glory. From Paris is Burning to Pose and the 2019 Met Gala’s “Camp” theme, balls have influenced pop and mainstream culture. In recent years, Athens has taken its turn in welcoming the scene, as ballroom houses (groups of friends with strong family ties) have moved from performing at the city’s fringes to its central stages. The Greek Ballroom scene presents the Eurovision Ball and the categories are open to all, even to first-timers. Local ballroom trail blazers Kiwi 007 and Luxury Kareola will be presenting, and a select judging committee with international members will be taking over the verdicts.
