P.H.A. Dromokaiteio: Egkleismoi
The title of the contemporary art group exhibition Egkleismoi (which we feel was probably left untranslated into English on purpose) means confinements, incarcerations and/or committals. Curated by Dimitris Trikas, it offers more than just an opportunity to learn about some of the history of the Dromokaiteio psychiatric institution. Ιt is also a study of the various forms of incarceration. This project features 48 artists who have created artworks and performances specifically for this exhibition. Their art is compelling and thought-provoking, and explores the subject through the use of various media such as comics, clay, ready-mades, patchwork, photography and more.
The project is hosted at three Dromokaiteio-owned locations: Agios Isidoros, an 1892 structure that was once used to house the sickest and poorest patients, Daftsio, a 1932 structure that sheltered the rich, and the former Printing Office, which is now a museum.
The exhibition has a distinct philosophical underpinning, and the dynamics of the space further enhance its uniqueness. Let yourself be carried away by the feelings that emerge from the setting and the connection between the works of art and space. We recommend visiting during sunset so as to experience this exhibition through the feelings that arise as night approaches. And if, by any chance, you want to brush up on your Greek, there will be open talks and seminars held throughout the exhibition.
