ROHTKO
Remember Rohtko, the mind-blowing spectacle that was one of the hottest tickets of last season? Well, it's coming back to Onassis Stegi for a limited run. Better act fast and secure your spot while you read up more about it.
For those of you who spotted it, let us clarify that we know very well how to spell Rothko, the name of the expressionist artist who revolutionised art with his paintings. The typo in the title is intentional and is a way of commenting on all that connects material possessions, art and forgery. Rotkho is a performance that explores the major scandal in contemporary art history of the fake Rothko painting that was sold for $8.5 million. The show’s setting moves from a Chinese restaurant, to an all-white New York gallery space with neon signs and the unmade bed of an artist, to screens towering seven metres tall. Polish director Łukasz Twarkowski offers a four-hour long performance, in which he packs up concerns regarding the nature of art, its value and worth in digital and AI times, as well as the freedom that artists have.
The iconoclastic creator’s spectacle, which blends theatre, film and video art, is performed in Latvian and English and has Greek and English surtitles.
