Yael Bartana: Two Minutes to Midnight
The National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens is celebrating women's art this season with a series of group and solo exhibitions honouring pioneering female artists.
Another artist, another incredible journey into the world of art. Over the past two decades, Bartana has delved deep into the world of video and moving image to uncover hidden layers of history. She succeeds in doing so by shedding light on lesser known but pivotal moments that have shaped our collective identity, as well as major historical events and speeches. But she doesn't stop there. She takes it up a notch by turning phrases and slogans into neon art installations/sculptures, as if they were unfulfilled political dreams. Here's one, for example: What if Women Ruled the World (2016), has been transformed into a large-scale installation at the museum’s facade in both Greek and English, specifically for the EMST building. This statement was also transformed into a two-hour performance in 2017. Based on this performance, and mimicking the setting of Kubrick's Dr Strangelove (1964), Two Minutes To Midnight is another example of Bartana's wild ride fiction, imagining a nuclear showdown with a twist—it's all women making the calls.
