English-Speaking Theatre Performances at Theatre of the NO
When it comes to foreign language films, Greeks are very much used to reading subtitles rather than having films dubbed into our language. When it comes to theatre, our own ancient performing art, we make sure to extend the same courtesy to our non-Greek-speaking audiences by using surtitles at our major productions; the Greek National Opera, the National Theatre of Greece, the Onassis Stegi, as well as smaller stages in the Greek capital follow this practice. However, there never used to be a strictly English-speaking theatre in the city. Until now.
The brand new Theatre of the No, at Plateia Vathis area in Metaxourgio, is the first theatre in Athens where all plays are performed in English. With a mixed cast of Greek and international actors, Theatre of the NO, which has a penchant for the theatre of the absurd, will be staging both classics and contemporary plays, as well as experimental productions that will provide a platform for new creators. They'll even be staging two operas in their first year!
