Cindy Sherman: Early Works
This must-see exhibition brings more than one hundred works by the legendary American artist Cindy Sherman to Greece for the very first time. Sherman is a pivotal figure in contemporary art. What sets her apart is her chameleon-like ability to transform herself into a myriad of characters, each challenging societal norms and stereotypes. Whether she's channelling the glamour of Hollywood or subverting traditional gender roles, her work demands engagement and reflection. Her innovative approach sees her take on every role in the creative process, from photographer to model, to produce work that is as thought-provoking as it is visually captivating. In this exhibition, visitors will encounter her groundbreaking series such as Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980), Rear Screen Projections (1980), Centerfolds (1981) and Colour Studies (1982). Challenging viewers to contemplate social stereotypes, each series explores themes of female identity and representation. A very pleasant development in the affairs of The Museum of Cycladic Art, which, apart from its marvellous showcase of ancient Greek and Cycladic culture, now turns its gaze to matters of contemporary art, using its neoclassical wing to house such important exhibitions.
