Athens Celebrates World Car-Free Day with a Grand Street Party on Athinas Street
We’ve always said that Athens is a city that rewards those who choose to explore it on foot. This year, on World Car-Free day, we turn that reward into a day-long urban party for all. On September 21-22, This is Athens - City Festival, organised by the City of Athens, celebrates World Car-Free Day with a great 24-hour free entrance street party on Athinas Street.
Starting at 8 pm on Saturday, September 21 and for 24 hours (that’s until Sunday, September 22 at 8 pm) Athinas Street – one of the city’s most significant commercial avenues – will be transformed into a car-free festival space for everyone to experience. But that’s just the headline! This special event offers something for every taste and age: DJ sets, live music concerts, skateboarding, roller and scooter sessions, bicycle workshops, film screenings, storytelling, and so much more. It’s the perfect opportunity to make the day all about Athinas Street. For a detailed programme, click here.
Athinas Street is one of the three thoroughfares (along with Ermou and Stadiou Streets) that define the Old Commercial Triangle of Athens. Τhis area of the city contains both the banking institutions that are its economy’s backbone as well as the one-man enterprises that represent its soul. Athinas Street connects Omonia Square and Monastiraki Square and is home to the Athens City Hall, the Varvakios Food Market, and the austerely beautiful Kotzia Square. It also intersects with Evripidou Street, where curious travellers who think with their stomach discover hidden treasures, as well as Protogenous Street, shelter to Athens’ GenZ and restless creatives.
For World Car-Free Day on Athinas Street, This is Athens - City Festival, organised by the City of Athens, will take over the section between Ermou Street and Evripidou Street and turn it into a pedestrian playground inviting visitors and locals to take part in this green celebration and embrace a car-free slice of Athens like never before. Don’t forget to bring your own wheels!
