The University of Athens was designed by Danish architect Christian Hansen, brother to Theophil Hansen who designed the Academy of Athens next door. Along with the National Library, these three landmarks form the so-called Athenian Trilogy —the epitome of neoclassical Greek architecture. Founded during King Otto’s reign, and largely funded by the king himself, the university later relocated to much bigger premises in Zografou. Today, this majestic building serves as a ceremonial hall.
