What's the story

This historically multicultural neighbourhood is the perfect location for the Benaki Museum’s impressive collection of Islamic art amassed by Antonis Benakis. He began collecting during his stay in Egypt in the early 20th century and continued to build on it after he settled in Athens.

Why it's important

This is one of the world’s top collections of Islamic art, geographically and chronologically. The collection covers a broad swathe of time and an equally large band of geography, with exhibits from India, the Middle East, Asia Minor, North Africa, and Spain.

Must-see

Navine Khan-Dossos’s mural, Imagine a Palm Tree, in the museum’s lovely rooftop café overlooking the ancient Kerameikos cemetery. The colourful installation creates a visual representation of Greece’s proverbial location on the crossroads between East and West.

Fun fact

An ancient tomb and a section of the ancient city’s wall, unearthed during construction, have been incorporated into the museum.
