When was it built

Well, it’s a hill, it has been there “forever”.

What's the story

The Acropolis has been inhabited since Neolithic times. The Acropolis’ peculiar geology makes it a natural fortress as the craggy plateau sits atop a sheer drop. At about 150 metres above sea level, it is half the height of Lycabettus but a much harder climb.

Why it's important

The ‘Sacred Rock’ of the Athenians is known worldwide for its architectural masterpieces, including the Parthenon, a monument of startling simplicity and beauty.

Must-see

The Temple of Athena Nike (or Wingless Victory) and the Erechtheion, an Ionic temple dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon. Built in 420 BC, this compact temple is known for the row of Caryatids on its southern porch.

Fun fact

Discovered by Greek archaeologists in 1897, the Klepsydra spring provided refreshment to the Greek fighters under siege during the Revolutionary War.
