Modern Greece’s oldest educational institution for the performing arts hosts cutting-edge art exhibitions, installations and performances.

When was it built

Designed in 1959 by renowned Greek architect Ioannis Despotopoulos in the Bauhaus style, the Athens Conservatory suffered a long series of delays, before it was partially constructed in 1976. The building was finally completed in December 2017.

What's the story

Founded as a non-profit organisation in 1871. Today, as well as a music school and a small children’s museum, the Conservatory is used for recitals and cultural events.

Why it's important

This institution has played a key role in the advancement of music studies in Greece since day one. It’s now expanding into new areas of the performing arts, such as drama, dance and jazz.

Must-see

The newly-restored Aris Garoufalis Hall for its superb composition of acoustic wall panels and Iroko wood flooring, channelling Despotopoulos’ original design which was never completed.

Fun fact

Famous former graduates include Maria Callas, Dimitiris Mitropoulos, Nikos Skalkottas, Gina Bachauer, and Mikis Theodorakis.
