When was it built

Three architectural periods have been noted, spanning from the late sixth century BC to the late fourth century BC.

What's the story

Pnyx comes from the Greek word pyknos, meaning dense. This open-air chamber could hold around 15,000 people—men to be more precise, members of the all-male Assembly of Athenians, or Ekklisia.

Why it's important

Aristides, Pericles, Demosthenes, and Themistocles delivered the brilliant orations associated with Athenian democracy here.

Must-see

A large niche in the rock wall just east of the speakers’ platform where there was a statue of Zeus Hypsistos and smaller cuts in the rock to hold votives.

Fun fact

Idling Athenians were called to the assembly by public slaves who stretched a braided rope covered in red paint to guide them to the Pnyx. If a citizen did not head for the assembly, he risked being marked with red paint thus bearing public humiliation and even paying a fine.
