The Athens Concert Hall is the place to hear world-class orchestras and performers in an acoustic setting equal to the best in Europe.

When was it built

The Megaron Mousikis opened in 1991 with two concert halls. Two smaller performance spaces have since been added in a new annex, which also has extensive conference facilities.

What's the story

The Athens Concert Hall was the vision of the late media mogul and patron of the arts Christos Lambrakis. He created an emblematic cultural institution, replete with chandeliers, Doric columns, marble and oak.

Why it's important

This state-of-the-art concert hall is also home to the Music Library of Greece, with some 10,000 sound recordings of composers, rare collections and traditional music in its archives.

Must-see

In winter, a classic opera like Carmen in the plush Christos Lambrakis Hall. In summer, a concert in the gardens, sitting on a lawn surrounded by orange and carob trees.

Fun fact

In ancient Greek palaces, the “Megaron” was traditionally the great hall or throne room, where feasts, parties, and religious rituals were staged.
