A museum of endless collections based on everyday life
Welcome to Athens, where the city is the museum. A museum of countless collections of people, objects, tastes, sounds, and feelings of everyday life. A museum where there are no display cases in sight, but where an abundant array of diverse exhibits is always accessible to the public and eagerly awaits to be engaged with. A museum that never closes, that constantly shifts, where your favourite exhibitions may be on display for a fleeting moment, or there for a millennium. A museum that is the city itself.
Our new, exciting project titled "Athens. The city is the museum" invites visitors to explore our fascinating city via a series of immersive audio walks. With the help of Google Maps technology, visitors can choose any of our three walks and listen to interviews with Athenians who talk about their city in the now, the past and the future, or even enjoy an engaging audio installation. Curated and narrated by locals, our new initiative offers an authentic in-depth look of Athens to anyone who wishes to explore its diverse landscape at their own pace. From testimonies by major players in the contemporary art scene, filmmakers, local craftsmen and designers, and from takes on street and skate culture to our celebrated gastronomy, the significance of Athens' urban markers such as the Greek coffee shop and our fabled periptera, you're invited to experience and engage with every trivial and fundamental aspect of our city.
Check out the video below before choosing one of the three walks that we have planned out for you.
"Athens. The city is the museum" is a collaboration between This is Athens, Google Greece, and the Ministry of Tourism.
