Greece's official patron and supporter of contemporary art, the National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST) is housed in the old brewery of Fix Beer. The building was transformed into an emblematic post-war industrial building by the architect Takis Zenetos who incorporated the old structures without interrupting the production process. Fix was brewed here from 1893 until the company went bankrupt in 1982. Abandoned for decades, the building underwent a second restoration starting in 2014, and EMST permanently opened its doors in 2020. With its distinctive elongated shape running between two major streets of the city, it has been considered an Athenian landmark for more than a century.
