The Kairi Cluster

One of Athens's most iconic stoas (arcades), Stoa Kairi (pronounced Ka-e-re) is home to packaging shops, knick-knackeries, and a couple of hidden art spaces. Climb up the monumental marble staircase to the second floor to visit Haus N Athen, a German-owned art space that showcases local artists, with a distinctly contemporary aesthetic that leans towards the conceptual. One floor up, the photography collective Metapolis (open during events or by appointment) holds workshops but also exhibitions by students and professional photographers. The balcony has a bird’s-eye view of the bustling Athinas Street below.

The Koukaki Cluster

With the National Museum of Contemporary Art at its doorstep, Koukaki was bound to have its fair share of smaller art spaces. State of Concept is a non-profit cultural foundation created in 2013 by art critic iLiana Fokianiaki that organises exhibitions, screenings, artist talks and educational programmes in a former clothing workshop. Right across the street is MISC, a new artist-run space dedicated to emerging photography and publications. A few blocks south you will find KOREN process space, a new studio and residency by artists Irene Ragusini and Euripides Papadopetrakis, dedicated to the work of young artists and with a special interest in printing techniques.
