The theatre was initially envisioned by actress Anna Synodinou as a venue where ancient Greek plays would be performed against the Athens skyline. It quickly expanded to host a diverse range of performances, from classical drama to international concerts. Designed by Zenetos, known for his modernist style, the 3,000-seat theatre was built with minimal impact on the natural landscape. Inaugurated in 1965, it thrived as a cultural hub until 2008. Following a major renovation by the City of Athens, it reopened in 2023, ready for its new era.
