When was it built

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was completed and unveiled on Greek Independence Day in 1932.

What's the story

Designed by architect Emmanuel Lazaridis and sculpted by Fokion Rok, this monument commemorates Greek soldiers who lost their lives in combat and remain unidentified. Its central feature is a relief of a fallen Greek soldier, symbolising the bravery of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Located in front of the Hellenic Parliament at Syntagma Square, the monument serves as a lasting tribute to Greece's unnamed heroes.

The monument stands as a focal point for national mourning and reflection. The daily Changing of the Guard at the site is a powerful symbol of respect, keeping the nation's connection to its past alive.

This one's easy: the Changing of the Guard. One of the most popular sights in Athens, the ceremony is an impressive display of precision, discipline, and stoicism. Two members of the Evzones, the elite unit of the Presidential Guard, stand watch in front of the monument and perform a ceremonial change every hour. The most dramatic change occurs on Sunday mornings at 11 am, when the entire Presidential Guard marches to the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, accompanied by a military band.

Fun fact

The names of significant battles and conflicts are inscribed on the monument’s walls. On the left side are battles from the Balkan Wars and World War I, while on the right are names from the Greco-Turkish War and World War II, as well as later conflicts.
