13th International Dance Film Festival
"Dance is the hidden language of the soul," said famous choreographer Martha Graham. If you’re hoping to crack the codes of this secret language, the International Video Dance Festival is a good place to start. Part of the larger non-profit Athens Video Dance Project (ADVP) initiative, the festival is gathering for the 13th consecutive year, offering a rich program of Video Dance screenings, performances and workshops, held in three different locations across Athens.
At the Bageion Hotel (look for the building with the Renaissance façade right across the busy Omonia Square), you can wander around the different areas and attend any of the 9 performances that will be running simultaneously. Then gather with your friends for "El Greco", by Alexandros Anastasiadis, a 30 minute performance that will top off your Sunday stroll.
At the Astor cinema, choose amongst 60 short, medium and feature films highlighting the creativity of filmmakers from 28 different countries. As a rather new genre (emerged in the 80's) Video Dance allows for new, hybrid and innovative voices to express themselves.
And if you want to get a chance to meet the next Martha Graham, make sure to swing by the Olvio Theatre where you can watch performances by promising dance and choreography students.
Update: The program of December 13th at Astor Cinema was postponed to December 19th.
