Alban Berg: Wozzeck
Alban Berg’s Wozzeck, considered to be one of the 20th-century's lyric theatre masterpieces, is being presented for the first time by the Greek National Opera in a new production directed by renowned French director Olivier Py. Internationally acclaimed Greek baritone, Tassis Christoyannis, will be taking over the taxing title role.
Based on Georg Buchner’s play Woyzeck, the opera follows the village life of soldier Wozzeck and his unfaithful wife. Learning of her infidelity, Wozzeck kills her and in an attempt to cover his tracks in a state of delirium, he drowns in a lake. One of the first extensive operas of the 20th century, Wozzeck is written in an atonal idiom with the use of Sprechgesang—a type of vocalization between speech and song. Vassilis Christopoulos, one of the most esteemed Greek conductors of late, will be taking over the baton.
