Alekos Fassianos: Design Works
Big news: Carwan Gallery and the Alekos Fassianos Estate present the first ever retrospective dedicated to a lesser known aspect of Alekos Fassianos’ legacy: his creations of functional design objects. Famous for his lithography and oil paintings, Alekos Fassianos has one of the most recognisable styles in contemporary Greek art. Fassianos, who initially studied under Yannis Moralis, became famous for his figures: always posing in profile, with prominent Greek features, depicted mostly in tones of primary colours, and exemplifying his preference for minimalism and natural materials.
Although not widely known was prolific in many art forms. His furniture reflects his general life philosophy: that we should always seize the day and make the most of our lives. So it comes as no surprise that all his furniture is designed with practicality in mind rather than comfort, yet, with love for the human body. Hand crafted and made of natural materials, they are a delight to use as well as look at.
Created by the artist in collaboration with master artisans, the more than 100 incredible hand-made objects reflect his passion for beauty and detail.
Part of the selection presented at this exhibition will be reproduced in small, certified editions in 2023 by Carwan Gallery, following the drawings and prototypes from the artist’s archive.
Contemporary design gallery Carwan was founded in Beirut in 2011 and touched down in Piraeus in 2020. Carwan's programme has consistently championed contemporary design from Western Asia and the Mediterranean. You’ll want to check out the red-hot Piraeus gallery district while you’re there.
