Alexandros Georgiou: “Prince in a blue crown meets the family in his body”
Alexandros Georgiou’s colour-drenched paintings are not the kind you glance at briefly; then move onto the next. They wrench you right into his inner-world; bathe you in melancholic curiosity.
Using oil paints and marker pens, Georgiou creates a multi-hued universe in which mysterious anthropomorphic creatures reside and interact, as if dredged up from the subconscious. This intriguing Greek artist studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts under the great George Lappas and lives between Athens and New York.
The quirky title of his new exhibition - “Prince in a blue crown meets the family in his body” – is a loaner from one of his works and conjures the feel of a fairytale.
Says the Rebecca Camhi Gallery, host of the showcase:
“The prince is a child, his crown is blue and he meets the family in his body, reminiscent of a dream. Perhaps he has been separated from his family and meets them in his body as a physical reaction to the emotional pain?”
Just something to get you thinking as you ponder these penetrating contemporary works.
