Alexandros Georgiou: Three continents, three friends
Artists are often asked: what's the meaning behind your work? For some, it's a very conscious decision. For others, it's a matter of creating when inspiration strikes and then reflecting on the meaning. Greek contemporary artist Alexandros Georgiou falls into the second category. According to him, his life's work is the result of feelings and instinct, not logic. An inspiring retrospective of his work (a staggering 500 artworks in all) from 1993 to the present day is on display in his current exhibition, Three Continents, Three Friends, at the Athens Municipal Gallery. Georgiou has travelled extensively and lived for long periods in both the USA and India. His adventures, especially in India, have shaped him and given new meaning to life. His figures, a mixture of human and otherworldly, painted with both thick brushstrokes and delicate lines, reflect his constant pursuit of ideals such as happiness, love and friendship. It is art that speaks from the heart.
