American Woman at Allouche Benias Gallery
A Native American woman's face is obscured by red Louis Vuitton logos in protest of capitalism's cannibalization of indigenous tradition. Dead-eyed tweens in bikinis wield Japanese swords in a girlboss future where women have parked their humanity. Sculptures of anthromorphized junk food tantalize with lush lashes and amphibious tongues. Welcome to the provocative world of American Woman, an urgent all-female group exhibition showing at Allouche Benias Gallery (a new Athenian offshoot of New York's Allouche Gallery, housed in a stately mansion in the historic centre). American Woman joins the swell of post-Trumpian female artistic expression originating from the United States. “In the grey area between political resistance and giddy self-indulgence, the artists of American Woman toy with the strange state of mainstream, corporate feminism today,” says the primer. You can check out the full exhibition catalogue with participating artists here.
