Anton Bruckner: The Composer of God
The year is 1881 and Vienna is buzzing. Anton Bruckner's Fourth Symphony is about to grace the stage for the first time. Little did the Austrian composer know that his new piece would go down in history as an absolute crowd-pleaser, capturing the hearts of audiences with its subtly magnificent melodies. Or perhaps he did know, since even before his work gained wider acclaim, he was being compared to Beethoven and Liszt by fellow countryman composer Hugo Wolf.
Fast forward to today, the Municipal Symphony Orchestra of Athens presents Bruckner’s timeless masterpiece, Symphony No. 4 in E flat major, often referred to as the “Romantic”. A perfect occasion for a grandiose night out at the Maria Callas Theatre, not to mention an ideal warm up for Wagner’s Die Walküre at the Greek National Opera later this month.
