Athens Avant Garde Film Festival 2019
Mainstream blockbusters and multiplexes don’t float your boat? Here’s a hot ticket that will. The Athens Avant Garde Film Festival sails into town soon for its tenth outing with a programme packed with some of the freshest and most groundbreaking flicks in world cinema. What’s more, you can catch them at two of Athens' coolest hubs of indy cinema: the Greek Film Archive’s Cinema Gallery and the Exile Room in Monastiraki. This year’s line-up includes nine experimental films by young moviemakers that explore issues of identity, society and multiculturalism—as well as films and documentaries that have already made big waves at major festivals like Cannes. The schedule isn’t out yet but we can share a few highlights: Brian Welsh’s Beats, a tale of teenage friendship and rebellion set in Scotland’s mid-90s rave culture (Welsh picked up an Emmy for his episode of Black Mirror); and from Switzerland, Klaudia Reynicke's Love Me Tender, about a young woman with acute agoraphobia, trapped in her family apartment and lonely life. Watch this space for the full line-up and ticket details soon.
