AEF2023: Nabucco
It’s that time of the year again, when Athenians start planning their summer holidays around the programme of the Athens Epidaurus Festival. The leading performing arts festival in Greece, and one of the oldest in Europe, returns between June 1st and August 26th for its 68th edition with a rich programme of events. As always, the main venues are the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the industrial complex of Pireos 260 and the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. Nabucco was Guiseppe Verdi’s big break into opera and has stood the test of time. It narrates the plight of the Jews as they are conquered and exiled from their homeland by Babylonian king Nabucco—the one we know of as Nebuchadnezzar II. Nabucco’s best-known number is the "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves”, a piece beloved by generations of opera fans and one that regularly gets an encore. The 2018 production, conducted by Paolo Carignani and directed by Leo Muscato, returns to the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. This is your chance to experience an opera masterpiece under the Athenian summer night sky.
