AEF2023: The Utopians
It’s that time of the year again, when Athenians start planning their summer holidays around the programme of the Athens Epidaurus Festival. The leading performing arts festival in Greece, and one of the oldest in Europe, returns between June 1st and August 26th for its 68th edition with a rich programme of events. As always, the main venues are the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the industrial complex of Pireos 260 and the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. “Everyone should be dancing.” The Thessaloniki-based En Dynamei Ensemble is a group of artists, both disabled and non-disabled who make sure that this sentence applies to all. For AEF 2023, and in collaboration with Viennese choreographer Michael Kliën, who specialises in “social choreography”, the ensemble presents The Utopians. This social choreography piece is an example of an emerging interdisciplinary field which aims to bring forth new ways of coexistence through art. Fifty people with mixed abilities perform at the industrial space of Pireos 260. At the same time, spectators aided by a group of guides, participate in this diverse dance.
