AEF2023: Utopia Orchestra & Teodor Currentzis: Symphony No. 3 by Gustav Mahler
It’s that time of the year again, when Athenians start planning their summer holidays around the programme of the Athens Epidaurus Festival. The leading performing arts festival in Greece, and one of the oldest in Europe, returns between June 1st and August 26th for its 68th edition with a rich programme of events. As always, the main venues are the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the industrial complex of Pireos 260 and the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. Click here for our festival picks or head over to the official website for the full programme.
Gustav Mahler’s gigantic Third Symphony is his praise to pantheism, his great hymn to nature. Distinguished Greek conductor Theodor Currentzis will perform the Austrian composer’s saga alongside his new artistic project, Utopia Orchestra, an international ensemble consisting of major world-renowned soloists. Contemplating Muhler's metaphysical questions about human existence, the human and the Divine, from which his Third was born, is optional. Just sit back and let the enchanting melodies carry you over the walls of the Herodion, into the night sky.
