Carnival and Clean Monday at the SNFCC 2024
It’s an exciting and diverse carnival season at the SNFCC. Athens' biggest cultural hub has a rich Apokries (Greek carnival) agenda planned for visitors and locals alike, as music performances and family happenings set the tone for a vibrant two-day celebration at various parts of the centre’s park.
On March 17th, the Stavros Niarchos Park transforms into the ultimate carnival destination. Bloco Swingueira, the vibrant multicultural percussion band, will fill the air with the explosive energy of Brazilian rhythms. Their performances, inspired by the Rio Carnival, are known for getting everyone grooving to the beats of samba afro and samba reggae. Meanwhile, The Jaguar Bombs are set to turn up the volume on the Great Lawn, blending rock 'n' roll classics with nostalgic pop tunes. Don't miss out on this colourful Sunday filled with live music, percussion parades, workshops, and masqueraders.
On Clean Monday things get a lot more regional and traditional, as Professor of Ethnomusicology Lambros Liavas curates a marvellous line-up of traditional Greek dances from all over the country with an open invitation to the public to join in. The Valkanis Brothers Brass Band from Florina and the musical group Eptasimo will set the tone with traditional brass instruments. Pontic and Cretan lyra players will get the dances going. Don’t know the steps? Just grab a local by the hand and step inside the dancing circle, they will handle the rest.
