The Classical Mikis Theodorakis: Works for Piano Solo
Even if you might think you've never heard his music, this is the man behind the iconic score of the film Zorba the Greek. A highly influential and prolific composer, Mikis Theodorakis was also a vocal political figure, his politics reflected in his oeuvre. Few, however, are aware of his “classical” period, and the upcoming piano recital at the Greek National Opera aims to rectify this. Virtuoso pianist Apostolos Palios will perform Preludes (1947), Little Suite for Piano (1954), Sonatina for Piano and Melos (1998), four of Theodorakis’ most important piano works conducted before and after his “folk period” for which he is most known for. Part of the GNO’s three-year cycle dedicated to the composer’s legacy, this is an exciting opportunity to delve into lesser known aspects of his work.
