Cyrano de Bergerac National Theatre Live
The whip smart poet saddled with an enormous beak. The handsome lunk he uses as proxy to woo his lady love. Cyrano de Bergerac is a tale that grooves with the ages. It’s been re-packaged countless times for the stage. Appropriated by Hollywood (both overtly and on the sly). Now Edmond Rostand’s 1897 tragicomic romance has been pitched for millennial theatre-goers into a “stunningly powerful piece of pure theatre” (so says London’s Evening Standard), with panache by the bucketload. Director Jamie Lloyd delivers a charged street-style rap skirmish, set in contemporary London, with a diverse cast led by James McAvoy, of X-Men and Atonement fame. Imaginative and clever, Lloyd’s Cyrano has been billed as one of the most exciting shows to hit London’s West End. Thanks to the marvelous National Theatre Live series, you can catch a single performance of it in Athens too – at the Megaron Athens Concert Hall. Modern Love, at its best
