Don Carlo: Greek National Opera
We’ve got just the ticket to warm up a wintery evening in Athens: Verdi’s grandiose five-act opera Don Carlo is coming to town with its sprawling tale of love, devotion, political upheaval and religious heresy in 16th century Spain. Celebrated British director Sir Nicholas Hytner captains this version, with lavish sets and costumes by Bob Crowley. A co-production of the Royal Opera House, London, the New York Metropolitan Opera and the Norwegian National Opera (Oslo), it was first presented at Covent Garden in 2008. One of Verdi’s most indispensable works, Don Carlo is peppered with impressive arias, duets and compelling ensembles and is like sitting down to a three-course meal for opera buffs. Catch it at the SNFCC as part of the Greek National Opera’s Italian Opera Cycle.
