Epistemologies of the Sun
It’s always the sun, to quote the Stranglers. Our exchanges with humanity’s perpetual source of inspiration bear creative fruits once again, this time connecting Athens with the so-called broader south - Belgrade, Kythera, Livadia, South Africa, and Rhodes - where the sun is equally untamed and powerful. Marina Fokidis, curator of the new group exhibition, Epistemologies of the Sun, that is up and running at the Camhi Gallery, gathered works by artists raised in South-eastern cultures, to form a body of work that speaks to their collective and singular relationships with our brightest star. Zoë Paul’s weavings on obsolete fridge grills, Iasonas Kampanis’ painted portraits of animals taken from ancient Greek mosaics and friezes, Yugoexport’s collection of zoomorphic ceramic sculptures and vases, Panos Profitis’ facemask-sculptures, inspired by the iconography of ancient Greek amphorae, and Eleni Kotsoni’s ongoing collage-installations, made from material fragments of the past and the present, create a continuous narrative that will be on display at the neoclassical townhouse that is Camhi’s HQ at Metaxourgio.
