Exhibition: Athens Celebrates its Freedom, 1974 & 1944
Athens celebrates its enduring spirit of freedom and democracy by delving into its rich historical archives. The City of Athens is honouring a landmark double anniversary: 50 years since the restoration of democracy after the military dictatorship in 1974, and 80 years since the liberation of Athens from Nazi occupation in 1944. The first event in a series of commemorations is a major historical exhibition at the Arts Centre in Eleftherias Park. Once a detention site, this location has been transformed into a hub of culture, creativity, and free speech, making it a fitting backdrop for reflecting on these pivotal moments in history. The exhibition uses archival materials to portray the joy and hope that marked the fall of the Nazi occupation and the end of the seven-year dictatorship through engaging narratives and exhibits.
From September onwards, the programme will include talks, screenings, tours, and performances.
