Fidelio
On October 12, Athens will awaken to commemorate the 80th anniversary of its liberation from Nazi occupation, with events unfolding throughout the city. In tribute to the legendary Maria Callas, whose name graces the theatre's façade, the Olympia Municipal Musical Theatre will present Beethoven's masterpiece, Fidelio, in concert format.
Premiering in 1805 amidst the revolutionary fervour that swept through Europe, Fidelio stands as a powerful ode to the struggle against oppression. Its Athens debut in August 1944, set against the backdrop of a city still under occupation, featured the radiant young Maria Kalogeropoulou—who would later be known as Callas—gracing the stage of the Herodion as Leonore.
To honour this historic performance, the current production will revive the original Greek translation from 1944, weaving together past and present in a celebration of resilience and freedom. It heralds a new era for the historic stage, showcasing an exciting programme filled with fresh productions for the entire season, all under the creative direction of celebrated baritone Tassis Christoyannis.
