Focus: American Independents at Bios.rooftop
Movies and cocktails with a view of the Parthenon. Sounds dreamy, right? Art space and performance centre Bios happens to have the key ingredient to Athenian summer: a rooftop bar which turns into an open-air cinema.
During May, and for every Thursday, film society KINO Athens teams up with Bios for their weekly independent American cinema screenings. Their selections seem to be all about the journey, not the destination: road trips, a quintessentially American film genre, go hand in hand with themes of youth and family ties.
Bummer Summer (2010): One of the first films shot in DSLR, with improvised dialogues by amateur actors, Bummer Summer is a charming coming of age story.
Putty Hill (2010): Putty Hill is the Baltimore answer to Midwestern Gunmo. Dealing with the aftermath of a tragic incident, a family and a community reflect on loss.
Gabi on the Roof in July (2010): Siblings, friends, and lovers in New York. Realistic in how they annoy each other, but also dearly love each other, a brother and sister duo clash as they end up living together in the city that never sleeps. Mumblecore microbudget at its finest.
The Color Wheel (2011): Part road movie, part screwball comedy, the film follows a brother and a sister - who’s on a mission to retrieve her stuff from her ex - as they cross through New England on a Honda Accord.
Be there early, the BIOS film nights are wildly popular. Then, lean back in your chair with your cocktail and enjoy.
