Giannoula Koulourou
Allergic to fairytale endings? This gloomy real life story of poor Giannoula, a simple lass from Patras who was destined to die penniless and alone, could be just the ticket. All Giannoula Koulourou ever wanted was to get married (her nickname came about because she was a koulouri—the Greek version of a bagel—street vendor). The locals began pranking Giannoula with fake marriage plots and non-existent suitors until she ultimately died of a broken heart. The unfortunate folk tale is brought to life in an inventive stage production by Giorgos Papageorgiou as part of the 2019 Athens Festival programme.
