Giuseppe Verdi’s Falstaff
“All the world’s a jest… but whoever laughs last, laughs best.”
Giuseppe Verdi’s final opera, Falstaff, is based on William Shakespeare’s comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor, the one that ends with the famous quote you just read. First presented in Milan in 1893, the opera was hugely successful and a brilliant conclusion to Verdi’s career. Vain old knight Sir John Falstaff makes a fool of himself at every step he takes. He finds himself in romantic misadventures, tragicomic situations, and gets tangled up in a myriad shenanigans, becoming the laughingstock amongst his peers. Directed by renowned British director Stephen Langridg, Falstaff is a light-hearted and highly entertaining production and a reminder not to take oneself seriously and to go with the flow in today’s unpredictable world.
