Grand Tour at the Benaki Museum
Did you know that there’s impressive British art on display at embassies and other UK government buildings around the world? This is how the UK Government Art Collection promotes British art across countries and continents. Thanks to the new collaboration between the British Embassy in Athens and the Benaki Museum, the Grand Tour brings seventeen artworks from the British Ambassador’s Residence in Kolonaki to the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture and at the Ghika Gallery. Now you have the chance to see, among others, Lord Byron’s portrait by Thomas Phillips and works by Joseph and Anton Schranz who depicted 19th century Greek island life. Paintings by renowned Greek painter Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika and his friend, modernist painter John Craxton, will be displayed at the Ghika Gallery, the former’s residence in Athens. Don’t miss the chance to see these notable artworks that, with the exception of the Lord Byron portrait, have never been displayed outside of the British Ambassador’s residence before.
