Greeks in Their Own Image
There are pockets of Australia where you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped into a transporter machine and been beamed straight to Athens (hello Lonsdale Street, Melbourne). The Greeks Down Under are one of the world's biggest and most colourful diasporas from Ελλάδα. Take the journey to Oz with this plucky photographic exhibition that captures the depth and diversity of Australia’s Greek presence through individual migration stories that strive to move and resonate. The images are by renowned Greek Australian documentary photographer Effy Alexakis who has banded together with historian Leonard Janiszewski to drill down into the Greek-Australian historical and contemporary presence in both Australia and Greece since 1982. Supported by the Australian Embassy in Athens, you can see the works for free at the Shedia Home social space on buzzy Kolokotroni Street (make sure to stick around afterwards for a bite or drink at this cool and inviting café hub).
