Henri Cartier-Bresson
"To take a photograph is to align the head, the eye and the heart. It's a way of life." These are the words of iconic photographer (and original travel influencer) Henri Cartier-Bresson. In collaboration with the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation, the Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation honours this legendary artist with a detailed tribute which unfolds in two distinct exhibitions.
The first one is a visual journey showcasing 74 remarkable shots from his seminal work, Images à la sauvette (The Decisive Moment), first published in 1952 with contributions from luminaries such as Tériade and Matisse. These photographs offer a glimpse into Cartier-Bresson's world—a testament so revered that Robert Capa, co-founder of Magnum Photos, hailed it as “a Bible for photographers.”
The second exhibition serves as a heartfelt ode to Greece itself, capturing the essence of the country from the 1930s to the 1960s as seen through the lens of Cartier-Bresson. It takes viewers from Athens and Cyclades to scenic Peloponnese, Thessaly and Epirus. Some 80% of these photographs are on display for the very first time, accompanied by a wealth of previously unseen archive material.
