The House of Memory
From late 2015 until early this year, Leda Kontogiannopoulou visited the houses of three transformative personalities of 20th century Greek art: Panayiotis Tetsis, Natalia Mela and George Seferis. Then she painted those houses with all the emotion and evocation she could muster.
Leda had known the former two artists personally and spent time with them; but the true star of this long-running Benaki exhibition is the dwelling of the master poet George Seferis: the now legendary “20 Agras Street”, next to the Panathenaic Stadium in Pangrati.
The 20th of September marked 50 years (1971-2021) from the death of Seferis – and Leda’s exhibition – "The House of Memory"– forms the centrepiece of the Benaki Museum’s multi-string tribute to this national treasure. By her own definition, the artist has drawn her references from the disquiet interiors of Edward Hopper, and the peaceful still lifes of Giorgio Morandi.
While you’re at the Benaki’s Ghika Gallery in Kolonaki, you can also check out Seferis’ 1963 Nobel Prize. It’s on permanent display there.
