I Puritani at the Olympia Municipal Theatre Maria Callas
The season’s rich programme at the Olympia Municipal Theatre Maria Callas wouldn’t be complete without a cycle of performances dedicated to the great opera diva whose career started at the first Olympia Theatre in 1944. Maria Callas performed in Vincenzo Bellini’s I Puritani (The Puritans) in Venice in 1949, a performance that marked her rise to stardom. The opera tells the story of Elvira and her doomed love affair with Arturo, a couple caught between opposing factions during the English Civil War – the Parliamentarian Puritans and the Royalists.
The opera is now presented in concert version by the Athens State Orchestra, the City of Athens Choir and with American tenor John Osborn and Greek soprano Christina Poulitsi in the leading roles.
