Jannis Varelas: Anima I
Humans in all our social and cultural contexts are endlessly fascinating to Jannis Varelas. In this latest solo outing, the sought-after contemporary Greek artist enlisted friends and neighbours to pose with everyday objects from the Historical Collections of the Benaki Museum, along with seemingly random domestic items. Varelas then transmitted the resulting photographs to canvas in his trademark kaleidoscopic explosion. Drawing inspiration from Carl Jung’s “collective unconscious”, the works of Anima I are grouped around themes such as solitude, mental anxiety, androgyny, sexuality, rejection, loss and the transition from private to public. The exhibition is co-produced by Onassis Culture.
