Jannis Varelas: Double Blind
Metaxourgio, Keramikos and Gazi form one of Athens' hottest quarters for art lovers. Gallery hopping in the area is a must during your visit, especially if you're the type of traveller who enjoys the unpolished sides of cities. One of the biggest players is The Breeder Gallery, housed in a formerly abandoned 1970s ice-cream factory in Metaxourgio. As Athens slowly returns to life as we knew it, so do its galleries with all their bottled-up creativity. Welcoming visitors strictly by appointment, The Breeder ushers in spring with Jannis Varelas' equally colourful new solo exhibition, Double-Blind.
Varelas' signature visual language, fusing abstraction and realistic imagery, is conveyed through a diverse range of media—painting, sculpture, works on paper, video and installation. He also employs physical scales to register a complex array of scenographies. Objects and the domestic space assume the leading roles, as he explores concepts likes the alteration of identity, the collective subconscious and its repressed desires and impulses.
The exhibition will be available through the end of May, via appointment only.
